Short Interpretive Text

Grangecon (Irish ‘Gráinseach Choinn’or Granary of the Hound) is a picturesque village that owes its origins to the Cistercian monks of Baltinglass Abbey. It started out as a ‘grange’ or outlier farm for the 12th century Abbey. The monks operated a corn-mill on a tiny slip of a river that runs through the village to the River Griese. In the 19th century the, now disused, Sallins-Tullow railway line stopped at the village. The railway bridge still remains along with the old schoolhouse and the village pump. The village has a strong associations with the racehorse industry and there are many well known local establishments.
